Mo tēnei tūranga mahi | About the role

We are looking for an enthusiastic and customer-focused Library Assistant – Children & Teens to help deliver a welcoming, inclusive and engaging library experience for our younger customers.

In this varied and people-centred role, you will support children and teens to access and enjoy library services, deliver high-quality programmes and events, and promote reading, learning and digital literacy. You’ll also contribute to frontline customer service, outreach activities, collection development and library promotion.

This is a hands-on role that suits someone who enjoys working with people, particularly children and young people, and who thrives in a busy, community-focused environment.

This is a part time position of 23 hours per week worked across Monday to Friday, and rostered on to work 1 in 5 weekends.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan and deliver engaging programmes, events and outreach activities for children and teens
  • Provide welcoming, high-quality frontline customer service, including enquiries, memberships and reader advisory
  • Promote and support the use of library resources, digital services and technology
  • Assist customers with internet access, devices and basic technical troubleshooting
  • Contribute to marketing and promotion of children’s and teen services, including displays and social media
  • Support development and presentation of children’s and teen collections
  • Carry out circulation, shelving, cash handling and general library administration duties
  • Work collaboratively as part of a supportive team and contribute positively to library operations

 This role requires someone with:

  • NCEA Level 2 or equivalent
  • At least 2 years’ customer service experience in a frontline role
  • A genuine interest in working with children and teens, and an ability to engage with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Excellent literacy, communication and time-management skills
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently when required
  • Confidence using computers & digital resources.
  • A collaborative, flexible and positive approach to teamwork
