Mo tēnei tūranga mahi | About the role
Council is involved in a wide range of projects at any one time – from CBD and public space upgrades to multi‑million‑dollar facility developments and post‑disaster recovery projects. In this role, you will take responsibility for the successful delivery of a number of these projects across parks, reserves, parking, community amenities, sports facilities, halls, swimming pools, senior housing, and commercial developments.
You will lead projects end‑to‑end, from concept and business case development through to design, procurement, construction, and close‑out, ensuring delivery within scope, budget, timeframes, and legislative requirements.
This role will see you:
- Lead and manage a varied portfolio of capital and service‑level projects
- Commission and manage consultant teams for design, feasibility, procurement, and contract delivery
- Apply strong commercial acumen to budgeting, financial management, and reporting
- Manage and administer contracts, ensuring best practice and value for money
- Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, Council policies, and health and safety requirements
- Prepare clear, well‑supported reports and recommendations for Council committees and governance entities
- Engage effectively with internal and external stakeholders, advocating for projects and outcomes
- Provide mentoring and advice to colleagues involved in smaller projects
This is a fixed‑term role to cover maternity leave, with the expected duration to be a 14 month period.

Ko ngā wheako ōu | About you
You will bring strong experience in providing high‑level project and commercial advice, supporting informed decision‑making, and working closely with key stakeholders to achieve successful project outcomes.
To be successful in this role, you will bring:
- A relevant tertiary qualification in commerce, project management, or a related discipline
- At least 5 years’ experience managing complex projects, ideally across multiple workstreams
- A strong track record of delivering projects on time, within budget, and to specification
- Excellent knowledge of budgeting, contract management, and project governance
- Sound understanding of relevant legislation (e.g. Local Government, RMA, Building Act, contracts)
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including report writing for senior stakeholders
- A pragmatic, solutions‑focused approach with the ability to operate effectively in a political and community‑focused environment
