We’re seeking a proactive and experienced Health, Safety & Wellbeing Senior Advisor to support our commitment of Council meeting its statutory obligations and operational requirements in relation to the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015. Joining a passionate team, you’ll work closely with staff and senior leaders alike — influencing a culture of safety and wellbeing across Council.
This appointment is a fixed-term arrangement, ending September 2026, to cover an exciting period of parental leave. The role will focus on taking the lead in delivering three key H&S projects; and continuing to provide HS&W advisory support within the organisation. Ideally, we anticipate a 1- 2 month handover with the current incumbent before you’d be expected to take charge.
What you’ll be doing:
- Lead and deliver three critical health and safety projects -
- Review of our Health & Safety Management System document,
- Implementation of a critical risk framework; and
- Review of our contractor management framework.
- Provide expert advice to managers and staff on day-to-day health, safety, and wellbeing matters.
- Support and coordinate our Health and Safety Representatives (HSRs) and the Health & Safety Committee, ensuring effective engagement and communication.
- Deliver clear and meaningful health and safety performance reporting, identifying trends, risks, and improvement opportunities.

Ko ngā wheako ōu | About you
We welcome applications from safety professionals with at least 3 years health and safety experience and previous experience in leading and delivering HS&W projects from planning through to implementation. Key to your success in this role will be your ability to influence and build effective relationships across all levels of the organisation.
You will also have:
- A Diploma in Health and Safety or a related field.
- Experience in the design and implementation of HS&W frameworks is highly desirable (e.g. in relation to risk management, contractor management and/or traffic management).
- Ability to provide clear, practical, and high-quality health and safety advice to managers across a variety of operational areas.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Experience coordinating and facilitating H&S Committee meetings and HSRs.
- Experience in preparing HS&W governance level reporting.
- Strong knowledge of legislation, regulations, code of practices, and relevant standards.
- Strong technical written skills and computer literacy.
- Training or experience in incident investigation methods (such as ICAM) desirable.
